Reddit for Virtual Reality

Hey everyone.  Apologies for the infrequent posts... I'm in a bit of a lull as far as Activeworlds goes (it happens).  Anyway, I'm still around on other parts of the net and I've acquired the r/virtualreality space on reddit to foster a commonground between various VR platforms.

For the uninitiated, Reddit is a social content site where users can submit links that other users can vote up and down on, and the highest-ranked content gets more exposure.  Reddit goes beyond other sites of this nature by allowing users to take control of reddits/subreddits (such as r/virtualreality), make their own rules, and manipulate their design.

I've spent the weekend preparing r/virtualreality, and I think its ready for others to join me now.  If you'd like to visit, just go to http://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/.  If you register a Reddit account, you can participate in the conversation by voting, commenting, and submitting.  It'd be really great to have a diverse crowd from many platforms, and I'd love to have some other AW users lurking around!

Commands in the Wild - Color

'Commands in the Wild' is an AWBuilder Tutorial series that features common usages of building commands.  This series assumes the builder is familiar with basic building and offers specific usages and techniques related to specific commands.

Quick Links:
ActiveWiki - Object Scripting
ActiveWiki - Color
----------
Use color to make seamless curves in low-lighting conditions
Example 1: Curved Surfaces
Location: Obsidian Drive-In Theater in Alphaworld
Anyone who has ever built in Activeworlds is aware of the struggle between textures when they are occupying the same space.  This is called zbuffer, and there are several ways to deal with it when doing precision building.  When building curved surfaces, object collision is often unavoidable without considerable effort.  One of the ways to overcome the visual mess of z-buffering is to not texture the surface, but to instead color it.

With no direct light applied by nearby objects in a scene, colliding objects with the color command applied will not appear to be zbuffering.  As a technical note... they still are, but the pure color is similar enough for the collision to not be a visual issue.  This is why objects designed in this way should not be near light sources, because they will effect the colors brightness and induce enough difference for the zbuffering effect to be noticable.

Use color to easily create painted lines on surfaces by sinking the object

Example 2: Painted Lines
Location: Obsidian Cove Athletic Park in Alphaworld
Perhaps the most common usage of the color command is to represent painted lines that commonly appear outdoors on roads and grass.  Color is ideal in this situation, because it is clean and the objects it is applied to are often thin and can be sunk into other objects to create a unique condition.

In the case of creating roads, better-quality roads are often created by using rectangular objects as 'road paint', which are then sunk into flat surfaces and repeated over the distance of the road.  This solution is also versatile, because the builder can simply manipulate the road paint to change which sort of intersection or exchange they would like to create.

Use color to provide additional details in the scene

Example 3: Expanding upon existing objects
Location: Southern Highlands in Alphaworld
A very helpful usage of the color command is to add component pieces to existing objects for the purpose of making that particular instance the object unique.  In the screenshot, the t_awhedge01.rwx object has been made unique by the addition of numerous red berries.

Other common examples of this are to add colored buttons to rectangular panels, colored decal to vehicles, and colored windows to building frames.

Noticeboard: Free Particle Set from JonBee

JonBee has released a set of free particles on the AW forums.  There wasn't much description given, but it sounds like a useful set of letters, numbers, and symbols to add some useful signage to builds.

You can see the forum thread by clicking here or download the set directly here.

A Successful Outing

TenYearsGone hosted a successful 'Airship Tour' of SW City in Alphaworld this evening... screenshots courtesy of Bach Zhaa can be found on the forums.  TYG has been trying to get this going for a few weeks and finally got a good turnout of ~15 today, which is really strong for a tour. :)

I was doing some other things (read: steam games) on my laptop when I got a PM from an AW friend to come in and join in on the tour, if that gives you any indication of how hoppin' it was on the ship. Followed them up on it and ended up having a good visit with friends.

I'll keep tabs on these and tag them on our noticeboard as they come up in the future!

Alphaworld Builders: Shear/Skew Petition

Shear/Skew have been disabled since the v4 rights bot stopped working, which has been troublesome for many builders who make use of the features for applications such as shearscaping (landscaping with shear/skew to easily manipulate 'terrain') and general building.  A poll has started in the AW Forums and has gotten some really good discussion going (including an excellent post by Byte) about the value of these commands and what a great asset they are to Alphaworld builders.

I'd like to join them in these remarks as I've personally used shear on a number of occasions in Alphaworld and AWTeen and the mathematic precision in producing angles is second-to-none.  Its much, much better than using three-axis rotation techniques and by using shear I've been able to streamline efforts in landscaping and construction projects, such as the Legacy Bridge in AWTeen.

Though I'm sure AWI Support would be more than happy to help you with shear/skew rights on an individual basis if you contacted them... I think it would be easier for everyone if these were just turned on by default. :)

AlphaMapper Progress Continues

Hey everyone!  I'm still on break through the end of this week, but I'd like to share a couple of things so it's not totally dead around here...

AlphaMapper Progress Continues

Byte has returned to work on the AlphaMapper and it's gettin ever-closer to being able to produce maps.  I understand the long wait-time may be frustrating to some Alphaworld builders, but I've been keeping up with Byte through the whole process and I can vouch that he's really taking the long, arduous road -- making all of the components himself -- so that when the product is finally done, the new AlphaMapper can be much more versatile than a simple mapper.  I think a lot of his recent promo videos and screenshots can attest to that.  One such video is below, where we see that he's got avatars and masks up and running.

Byte keeps a blog about AlphaMapper progress, which you can find in our 'What's new in AW?' sidebar links.  If anything new hits, you'll be sure to find it there!

Town Hall Meeting

This week's Town Hall Meeting will be today in AWSchool (Click to Teleport) at 6pm VRT.  From the looks of things there are a lot of big ideas floating around that need some dedicated volunteers.  If you've got the time and are up to it, feel free to step out and lend a hand.  :)

Annnnd that's it for me.  I'll try to get a new poll up this week, but I'm heading into finals so there's no guarantee.  Later!

Weekly Poll 1 Results

Sorry for the delay on this, everyone.  Here are the results from our first "Weekly" Poll:
  • Question: What should the status of V4 Rights be in Alphaworld?
  • Total Votes: 15
  • V4 Rights should be available to all users -- citizens and tourists.
    • 2 Votes
    • ~13% of the vote
  • V4 Rights should be available to all citizens.
    • 13 Votes
    • ~86% of the vote
  • V4 Rights should be available to users that have earned rights.
    • 0 Votes
  • V4 Rights should not be available in Alphaworld.
    • 0 Votes
Analysis
As you can see from the poll, our readership here at AWBuilder was very much in support of V4 Rights being extended. There were NO votes in support of the existing arrangement.  At the time, V4 rights were restricted to citizens who had earned them in building competitions.  Earlier this month, however, AWI released the rights to all users in the world -- including tourists.  I personally feel this was the more prudent solution for AWI, since the existing arrangement had been broken due to a bot problem, and was estimated to have takenat least a month to repair. This also frees them from the responsibility of having to maintenance the bot (and the rights list).

The addition of tourists V4 rights was a surprise, and there still seems to be some debate on that.  The argument against tourist V4s generally follows that if anyone was to abuse it, it would be an anonymous user under a Tourist account.  There is some precedent for this, and I suppose if it does become a problem tourist rights could be restricted in the future.  For the time being, at least, allowing tourists to play with this powerful feature could be a boon for retaining new users.

AD&DRPG - Dragon Coins

Some good news came out for AW games last week as DM Mercury introduced a new element of gameplay to AD&DRPG -- Dragon Coins.

"Some elder dragons have started distributing a new form of currency in the Mid-Rift to their lesser minions in order to gain their support for an uprising.  This currency is quite magical and in the hands of a player can be quite powerful giving players extra abilities that they would not have otherwise had.

You can acquire dragon coins by killing monsters once you are level 10 and fighting monsters who are at least level 10.  Not all monsters will have Dragon Coins.  If you receive a Dragon Coin it will be added to your character automatically, and you will receive a pretty pink message after the kill.

You can view your current Dragon Coins on the /stats command.
"

So in essence, a special currency was introduced to the game that allows players to perform special commands when they acquire enough of it. The commands that have currently been implemented are as follows:
  • /dragon heal
    • Cost: 1 coin
    • Heals both HP and MP to full
  • /dragon gold
    • Cost: 1 coin
    • Gives you 200gp
  • /dragon teleport list
    • Cost: 0 coins
    • Lists teleports you have and how many times you can teleport there.
  • /dragon bind (n)
    • Cost: 25 dragon coins for 50 teleports
    • Sets your current location to teleport (n).  The value of (n) must be 1,2, or 3.  Warning this will override any previous teleport and reset the number of teleports you have to 50.
    • Example usage: /dragon bind 2
  • /dragon teleport (n)
    • Cost: 1 teleport
    • Teleports you to a previously defined teleport via /dragon bind (n).  Teleports are specific to a Teleport (n), where n is the value 1,2, or 3 that you set your teleport to.
    • Example usage: /dragon teleport 1
  •  /dragon refresh (n)
    • Cost: 5 dragon coins for 10 teleports
    • This allows you to add 10 more teleports to a bind location you have already set.
    • Example usage: /dragon refresh 3
The big feature here seems to be personalized teleportation... which is great in a game like AD&DRPG where the player is always on the move, and doesn't necessarily have to have a 'home.'  This feature is still in development and DM Mercury is looking for suggestions, so if you have any feedback feel free to visit the forum thread concerning Dragon Coins.

BTW I'm on Break

In case you hadn't figured it out from the lack of activity here. ;)  School is very busy and there looks to be a whole heap of drama in AW at the moment, so I don't expect that I'm missing out on a whole lot.

While I've been away, Byte has released the latest version of the ActiveWorlds SDK .NET Wrapper on the forums. I'd like to dabble with this a bit once my summer classes have come to an end in early August, and if I make any progress I'll be sure to post it up here on the blog. :)

Another note... v4s were enabled for everyone in Alphaworld a couple of weeks ago.  Good news, right? :D

Town Hall Meeting going on NOW in AWesome World

AWesome World has reopened and is the setting of this week's Town Hall Meeting, which will be going on for the next two hours.

If you recall, the world was to be an inspired setting for younger users and their friends/family, but it fell into disrepair and neglect as many projects tend to do. RMConstruction is the current world caretaker and is looking for a new purpose for AWesome World, but that hasn't yet been decided by AWI.

Schedule of Topics: Click Here for AWForums Thread

Google+ Invites

I was able to get in yesterday after an invite from two separate individuals was delayed by nearly a day.  Despite the long wait-time, the system is fairly intuitive to use and seemed to hold up well when I dumped a 200-photo album of the BuildCity project onto the network.  Google+ had all of my info and uploads from other Google products I use (Blogger and Gmail primarily) ready to access as soon as I logged on, so I was able to pick up a profile picture from Blogger right away.  The integration is nice, and the features that I've discovered so far are straightforward and simple to figure out.

Anyway... who wants an invite?  Let me know by posting a comment here with your contact info and I'll drop you a line.  Just a small thanks for my readers. ;)

Noticeboard: AWExpo Cancelled, Texpo Announced

A bit of ruckus was caused earlier this week when GSK announced that in a joint decision with AWI, the 2011 AWExpo will be cancelled.  The AWExpo had a rough start out of the gate, and despite general community support the struggles came to a climax last week when a vandal took advantage of a Caretaker's privilege password to damage the world.  The Expo world closed in the following days and GSK looked to step down -- even making plans for a successor so that the expo could continue... but AWI did not accept the proposal, and thus the event will be ending.

Builders who have already made a booth have until Monday to save their progress before the world OP is closed.

In light of this decision, citizen Xandrah (Xandrake on the forums) has offered their private, P-100 sized world (RF3D world) up for a community expo that AWI won't be hosting.  The premise of this new event is essentially the same as the AWExpo, with the only difference being that the event dates have been bumped to mid-July and the attendance will likely be lower since AWI has pulled support from an Expo this year.

ActiveWorlds Technology Expo Dates

  • June 30th - July 10th
    • Registration is open; telegram Xandrah in-world
    • Booth Building is Open
      • Building Guidelines:
        • If you have a plot please only build within your plot space.
        • Please make sure your booth is to do with Active Worlds.
        • If your booth is not about Active Worlds it will be deleted.
  • July 11th
    • Texpo Begins
  • July 16th
    • Texpo Ends
I am not sure yet if AWBuilder will be participating in the Texpo as I have a rather full schedule leading up to the event, but if I do I'll announce it here.  Hoping to see some good things come of it, and we wish it well. :)

Web - How to Refresh Images

The trick behind AW television stations that use rotating jpgs is pretty simple in AW... but how about on webpages?  Unfortunately, there's nothing as simple as 'create picture' to manipulate images, but a snippet of Javascript should work just as well.

<IMG src="image_name.jpg" width="309" height="309" border="1" name="refresh">
<SCRIPT language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
var t = 120 // interval in seconds
image = "image_name.jpg" //name of the image
function Start() {
tmp = new Date();
tmp = "?"+tmp.getTime()
document.images["refresh"].src = image+tmp
setTimeout("Start()", t*1000)
}
Start();
// -->
</SCRIPT>
<!-- Code End -->

I don't know much about Javascript, but I found this online and was able to re-purpose it down to what we'd find useful around here.  When we apply the code above to WTV, for example, the result is an image that refreshes... every 10 seconds.  Exactly what we coded, right!? :)

Just pop that into your page and replace the jpg source, and it should refresh the image every 10 seconds.  This is ideal for tv stations that want the slideshow to work on webpages, and it also has other applications (such as webcams).

Noticeboard: WTV Opens, Help Wanted

WTV opened today after some initial planning by Watson and the staff of WolfW1 world.  As announced today in the Activeworlds Forums, Shadow Creature and Watson. plans to build the station up in the coming weeks, and is looking for helpers and volunteers.  I dealt quite a bit in AW television back in the day as a senior staff member at VWTV... and know firsthand that there's a lot of work to be done on an endeavor such as this, so feel free to offer your skillset because they could surely use actors, builders, designers, writers... maybe even an audience member!

WTV takes after the tv stations of the past by using rotating jpgs to create a 'slideshow.'  In AW, this is achieved by applying an update parameter to the picture command.  Simply apply the following code to the action line of any object that accepts the picture command, and you'll see the image below:

Something unique that WTV appears to be attempting is that they are looking to run multiple channels of their programming at the same time.  Hopefully they'll be busy enough to justify the many channels!  AWBuilder wishes this new endeavor luck, and encourages any interested in participating to visit WolfW1 World in Activeworlds or the website at http://wolfw1.net/.

(Note: If you're viewing this on the frontpage with the related TV post, the image above may be breaking because the script is attempting to run twice on the same page. Simply read this post on its own page to correct the issue.)

Weekly Poll #1: V4 Rights in Alphaworld

For some time I've wanted to integrate viewer opinion on the blog, and I've suspected that the easiest way to do so would be through polls... but indecisive me, I never quite decided on how I wanted the polls to be formatted on here.  I did some tooling around today and I'm pretty happy with where they're at now.  It's not eating up too much of the page there. :)

I'll try to make this a regular thing, changing the poll topic every week or so.  Readers will have the chance to vote and comment on the related posts.

Weekly Poll #1: V4 Rights in Alphaworld
With the ongoing absence of Tom comes also the absence of his many services, one of which being the bot that managed special rights in Alphaworld.

The bot was well known for its dramatic setting at Pamozo Island -- where it would cycle through citizen numbers in the rights list upon request.  This is necessary because of a technical restriction in the rights list that only allows so many characters (and consequently citizen numbers) to be included in the list. The bot helped us to get around this by adding a citizen number to the end of the list when they wanted to use v4 rights, and then bumping the first person on the list off.

There's currently a debate on the forums about what should be done now that this bot is currently offline... because its been reported that it would be at least mid-July before AWI could restore the bot.  Many users feel that the right should be open for all builders, while others want a line to be drawn. What do you think?  Is what we have the best solution?  Feel free to vote, and if you're not represented in the poll... feel free to leave a comment!

Universe Spy during Community Photograph

AWPortal's Community Spy offers a very handy graph to show us the exact numbers during the Community Photograph yesterday.  Check it out below:

Looks like we hit around 120 in the Gate and over 150 in the universe.  That's a nice change of pace these days, huh? :P

Activeworlds 16th Birthday - Community Photograph Part 4

Happy Saturday everyone!  Activeworlds turns 16 on June 28, and we've opened up a week full of festivities with an annual event... the community photograph!  Over 115 users were in AWGate Saturday for the photo.  I was able to take a ton of screenshots before and after the arrival time, and I'm just gonna dump them all into a few posts.  Each post will only contain 10 shots so the loading time for the page isn't miserable.
